COMMODORE'S REPORT

April 2013

Never was there a more wonderful sight than that of a large crane and barge loaded with pilings alongside the dock. Watching the pilings being placed and partially driven in record time is very sweet. We owe John Keegan many thanks for his selection of KT Marine. The contractor is proving to be an excellent choice. Materials were ordered the day after the special meeting and work begun without a deposit or contract, just on our word!

Again many thanks to those members who continue to help with the lower level. The crew, small but mighty, is making downstairs happen. Special thanks to the boss, Steve Flinchbaugh, for coordinating the work as well as working late at night. Whether you have a skill or not, please join the Saturday work parties for dock or the downstairs. The temporary shed is now complete and th Saturday (April 20) will be the clearing out and cleaning up day for the downstairs.

A Help Hint - Monday, May 13, 2013
A Helpful Hint From KYC Member Jeff Ullman

As I prepare for the upcoming season, I managed to successfully clean all that bird poop off my bimini canvas.  As there are dozens of theories about cleaning this nasty stuff, and most do not work, I wanted to share a process that does work with fellow KYC'ers.

If you have a sunbrella bimini/dodger, bombed by the birds, this is what works:

Spread the canvas out on a driveway or other flat outdoor surface; hose off as much of the solid matter as you can get.  Fill a bathtub about 5" deep with cool-warm water and add mfr's recommended amount of Oxi-Clean.  Be sure Oxi-Clean is fully dissolved.  Water should feel soapy and slick to the touch.  Put the canvas in the tub; let it soak a good half hour or so, occasionally agitating it by hand.  (I put the canvas in a large trash bag for transport to the house; saves the need to clean up the drips later.)  After soaking, remove the canvas back to the driveway (via plastic bag again); rinse thoroughly using garden hose and use a nylon pot scrubber, or the business side of a nylong backed sponge to address any stubborn stuff that remains.  A little elbow grease should be all that is required; any remaining white stuff should come right off.  Dry the canvas in the sun; it will look like new.  Sunbrella recommends treating it with 303 High Tech Fabric Guard to restore any lost resistance to weather.
