Learn to Sail at Keyport Yacht Club Sailing School (KYCSS)

At KYCSS we keep it Simple and FUN!

Whether you are new to sailing, need a refresher, or wish to expand your sailing skills, we have American Sailing Association (ASA) Certified Courses available that are perfect for you.

Raritan Bay and Keyport Harbor provide protected sailing areas for novices as well as open water challenges for advanced students. Learn to sail while taking in magnificent views of the Manhattan Skyline and soak in the beauty of our New Jersey sunsets. This area is ideally suited to learning the sport of sailing, from basic techniques to coastal cruising, navigation and chartering.

The Keyport Yacht Club Sailing School (KYCSS) is conveniently located just off exit 117 of the Garden State Parkway.
KYCSS ASA certified instructors are experienced sailors who will teach you to sail confidently and safely while having fun learning a sport that you can enjoy for a lifetime.

At KYCSS, as an ASA certified facility, you can experience the class and boat style to make you comfortable with sailing on the level you desire. For those who may want to start from the beginning, as so many young sailors have, or would like to become involved with racing sailboats, we offer sessions aboard a tiller boat with an outboard.

For those who want to get into a cruising boat faster, you can experience a boat 26’ or larger with wheel steering and inboard diesel engine. This option provides a very stable platform for those seeking a certain level of comfort.
We offer choices that not only teach you how to sail but give boat options that suit your future plans.

Our small group classes are mostly taught on weekends and include classroom instruction and on the water participation.

Weekday classes can be arranged if needed. The average day involves five to six hours of hands on sailing

The State of New Jersey requires anyone operating a boat with an engine to obtain a Boating Safety Certificate!

Where can I take a Boat Safety Course? To find an approved safety course in your area, it is easiest to search the internet for NJ Boating Safety Classes or check newspapers.

Can I take the boat safety course on-line? Yes. However, after successful completion of the internet portion of the course, the student will have to complete an in-person, proctored exam. The Marine Services Bureau cautions students, prior to beginning the on-line study, to check with the on-line course provider to insure they provide a testing location within driving distance from the student’s location.
