Junior Sailing

For more than 20 years, the Keyport Yacht Club’s Junior Sailing Program has been providing fun and safe sailing lessons to children who are 8-17 years old. The goal of the program is to teach young students to handle small boats safely and have fun on the water.  The Junior Sailing program follows the US Sailing Standardized course of instruction and instructors have been certified under the US Sailing Level 1 or Level 2 instructor programs.

Our premier sailing program teaches more than sailing skills, it teaches teamwork, sportsmanship, self-reliance and confidence — skills and experiences that will benefit our program participants for a lifetime! The fact that many of our junior sailors return year after year demonstrates just how fun and rewarding the experience can be. Many of our junior sailors go on to become sailing instructors, participate in high school and college sailing programs, or continue to build their racing skills by crewing on the club’s own race teams.

The Junior Sailing program is open to the public and boats are provided. Weekday and Saturday programs run for six weeks. The program includes both on water and on shore lessons from certified sailing instructors and include boat handling and safety, sail trim and navigation, boat maintenance and rigging, and racing tactics.  Junior sailors interested in developing racing skills and discovering their competitive side can participate in junior sailing regattas at neighboring yacht clubs.

Camp Programs:

TURTLES PROGRAM - $250 per child
Ages 5-7
9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.
Monday, June 30th to Thursday, July 3rd

The turtles program is designed for our youngest sailors and is primarily focused on making sailing fun and developing a love for the sport.  We want each child to go away wanting to sail more and learn more about sailing.  Sailors will learn about safety around the dock and on the sailboat, basic boat parts, how to trim sails, and may even have a chance to steer the boat.  To ensure everyone’s safety and have a focus developing a comfort around the water, the children will NOT be in a boat by themselves.  Throughout the week, children will be on a boat that is captained by an instructor or one of our mentors.  Children may have opportunities to sail on the Optimist or the Club 420 depending on the weather.

TRY-ME PROGRAM - $600 per child
Ages 8-17
9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.
Monday, June 30th to Thursday, July 3rd

Our Try-Me program is where new students can get a taste of what junior sailing has to offer. Our one week Try-Me program teaches students parts of the boat, rigging, independent sailing, and even very basic racing skills. At the end of the week we have a mini-regatta, so the students can show-off what skills they learned. If your child loves the Try-Me program we leave spots open in our other programs, so they can extend their time with Junior Sailing!

SIX-WEEK PROGRAM - $1,550 per child
Ages 8-17
9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.
Monday, July 7th to Thursday, August 14th

The longest program we offer is our Six-Week Program. The long runtime of the program gives the students the opportunity to learn a significant amount of sailing skills including parts of the boat, sailing knots, wind direction, points of sail, docking, racing, and more. Students are also given the opportunity to compete in four different regattas that take place throughout the season. And with all that we still find time to play games and swim!

TWO-WEEK BEGINNER PROGRAM - $850 per child
Ages 8-17
9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.
Monday, July 7th to Thursday, July 17th

Our first Two-Week Program is our beginner program and lines-up with the first two weeks of our Six-Week Program. That way when new sailors in the Six-Week Program are learning the basics and returners need a refresher, the beginners can be learning the basics right alongside them. The beginner program focuses on parts of the boat, rigging, wind direction, and more. If your child joins the beginner program and enjoys it, if there are still spots available you can extend them into our next Two-Week Program.

TWO-WEEK INTERMEDIATE PROGRAM - $850 per child
Ages 8-17
9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.
Monday, July 21st to Thursday, July 31st

Our second Two-Week Program is for our intermediate students, including students who have sailed before with family, but have never learned how to sail independently, returning students who are more interested in casual sailing over competitive racing, and anyone who enjoyed the beginner program and is ready to move-up. This program focuses on more complicated concepts like points of sail and docking, as well as a brief introduction to racing, but is not an intensive racing program. After the intermediate Two-Week Program comes to an end, spots permitting, you will be able to extend your child's time into the final Two-Week Program.

TWO-WEEK ADVANCED PROGRAM - $850 per child
Ages 8-17
9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.
Monday, August 4th to Thursday, August 14th

Our last Two-Week Program is for students who are really interested in racing. The program will focus on learning and honing specific racing skills, including starting strategies and flying a spinnaker. Sweeps, a four-day regatta, also typically takes place during one of these two weeks, so the students will be given ample opportunity to put their new skills to the test.

PRIVATE LESSONS - $300 per lesson or $800 for three lessons
Ages 8-17
5:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. on Mondays through Thursdays
9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. on Fridays and Saturdays

Private lessons are for students who want an intensive one-on-one learning experience. Whether a beginner, intermediate, or advanced, a single private lesson will cover a wide range of sailing topics, provide land drills, and on-the-water practice. Private lessons can be for a single child, or a small group of 3-4 students.

OPEN SAIL - $50 per child, with a minimum 5 student requirement to run
Ages 8-17
9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.
Sundays

For a few hours every Sunday, students can come and sail around our bay recreationally under the supervision of our instructors. Depending on the amount of instructors available per day the number of students allowed on the water at once will be limited, however students would just take turns sailing, so everyone has an equal opportunity to sail.
